October 2019 – On behalf or Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, Kelly Sears assessed the private sector landscape in health-related genomics in Canada by mapping the activities of the private sector, analyzing the scale and impact of private sector investments, and identifying the challenges and opportunities. In the Canadian health sector, genomics has been proven to save lives and improve health outcomes and disease management for patients touched by cancer, heart disease, autism, epilepsy, rare diseases and other debilitating diseases. As genomics research moves from the “bench to the bedside”, clinical applications of genomics are expected to affect many areas of medicine, improve disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, as well as inform our approaches to wellness, nutrition, and public health. This assessment was completed in December 2019.
