February 2022 – Kelly Sears is conducting a review of the Consumer and Clinical Radiation Bureau at Health Canada, a science-based organization with the mandate to protect the health of Canadians from the risks of radiation- emitting devices. A wide range of devices are regulated, including security products (e.g., airport baggage scanners), tanning equipment, and medical devices (e.g., x-ray equipment). The purpose is to align the organization and its capacity with proposed changes to legislation (the Radiation Emitting Devices Act). The study involves extensive interviews with managers inside and outside the Bureau along with interviews with key federal and provincial stakeholders. The study also involves a benchmarking exercise, examining how the US FDA carries out similar responsibilities.
